If you’re shopping metal panels and feel like the names are… alphabet soup, you’re not wrong. Two of the most common are the 5-Rib – our MP36 – (¾″ rib height) and PBR – our MP36PRO– (aka R-panel with a Purlin-Bearing Rib, 1¼″ rib height). They look similar from the driveway—but they behave differently on a roof or wall.
Here’s the quick guide:
The 10-second takeaway
-
MP36: budget-friendly, classic look, great for barns, garages, sheds, and homes; 36″ coverage, ¾″ ribs spaced ~9″ apart; typically 29–26 ga; common minimum roof slope around 3:12.
-
MP36PRO: deeper 1¼″ ribs, purlin-bearing leg adds strength, tighter lap, better spanning on purlins; often allowed on lower roof slopes (down to 1/2:12–1:12); widely used on commercial/industrial roofs and walls, but also great for heavy-duty ag and residential.
What those differences mean in real life
1) Strength & Span
-
MP36PRO purlin-bearing leg (PBL) sits on the support and creates a more secure lap. Translation: stiffer panel, wider spans, and cleaner alignment—handy on big buildings or long runs.
-
MP36 is still tough, but it’s the “everyday athlete,” not the powerlifter. Great when supports are closer together.
2) Weather-tightness at the sidelap
-
MP36PRO’s PBL helps the overlap seat firmly on purlins and can improve water resistance at seams
3) Roof slope flexibility
-
MP36PRO is commonly approved down to 1/2:12–1:12 with sealant and proper details.
-
MP36 is a system we typically recommend for 3:12 or greater. If you’re flirting with low slope, MP36PRO usually wins.
4) Look & vibe
-
MP36 = classic 5-rib profile—subtle, familiar, farm-to-modern farmhouse.
-
MP36PRO = bolder, deeper ribs—reads more industrial/modern (and meaner in the best way).
5) Cost & gauges
-
MP36 often comes in 29 ga (budget hero) and 26 ga.
-
MP36PRO more often in 26 ga and thicker—you’ll usually pay more, but you’re buying strength and span.
When to pick which?
Choose MP36 if you want:
-
A cost-effective, good-looking roof or wall on barns, garages, porches, simple homes.
-
Standard slopes (≥3:12) and supports that aren’t spaced like an aircraft hangar.
Choose MP36PRO if you need:
-
Longer spans, more muscle, or lower slopes where details matter.
-
Extra sideseam stability on open purlins and big roofs.
-
A slightly more industrial aesthetic.
