New Technology means faster, more accurate measurements.
Not that long ago, metal estimating meant climbing ladders, pulling tape measures, sketching roofs by hand, and hoping nothing was missed. Today? Technology has completely reshaped how contractors estimate metal roofing, siding, and post-frame buildings—making the process faster, more accurate, and far more profitable.
Here’s how modern tools are changing the game.
Digital Takeoff Platforms: Faster Quotes, Fewer Mistakes
Digital takeoff platforms replace hand-drawn sketches with precise, scalable digital plans. Contractors can upload drawings or aerial measurements and generate material quantities automatically.
The benefits are huge:
-
Consistent, repeatable estimates
-
Reduced material waste
-
Fewer costly reorders
-
Clean, professional proposals for customers
When estimating becomes digital, accuracy improves—and confidence goes way up.
Been selling metal for 11 years and still haven’t seen anything that will calculate the panel length and trim pieces needed accurately. They only work for square footage for shingles. Nothing has replaced the actual hand measuring to get the panels cut accurately.
We have developed a program for our customers called BuildCalc that accurately calculates trims based off aerial measurements. While we still recommend pulling a measurment for panels just to verify, technology is getting a lot better. We also sell all our standing seam just like shingles and ordering by the square is something all of our customers are able to do because of our onsite roll former rental program, it’s a game changer!
