The Basics

What Is a
Barndominium?

A barndominium — or "barndo" — is a post-frame structure built like a pole barn on the outside, finished like a house on the inside. They go up faster than stick-built homes, cost less per square foot, and look incredible when you wrap them in quality metal.

In Indiana, barndominiums are exploding in popularity. They make sense here — rural lots, ag zoning, and a culture that appreciates building something that lasts. The steel exterior is what sets the look and protects everything inside. That's where we come in.

Barndominiums go by a lot of names. You'll hear the same structure called different things depending on who you're talking to:

Barndominium Full living quarters inside a post-frame metal shell. Can be 1 or 2 story, any size. The classic "barndo."
Shouse Shop + house. Combination of a working garage or shop bay with attached living space. Extremely popular in rural Indiana.
Pole Barn Home Same post-frame construction method, different name. Some counties and lenders use this term for permitting and financing.
Post Frame Home Technical term for the construction method. Posts set in ground or concrete, metal exterior, open interior floor plan.

The Steel Package

What Your
Barndo Needs
From Us

Every barndominium is a custom build — but the exterior steel package breaks down into the same core components. Here's what Indiana Metal fabricates for barndo projects:

01

Roof Panels

The roof takes the most abuse — hail, wind, snow, 30-year Indiana weather cycles. We fabricate roofing panels in multiple profiles to match your pitch, style, and budget. Standing seam is the premium barndo choice. MP36 or MP150 are excellent for exposed-fastener builds.

02

Wall Siding

The siding is what people see. It defines the look of your entire build. Board & batten is the dominant barndo siding choice right now — clean, modern, vertical lines. We also fabricate MP36 siding for a more agricultural look, and wainscoting options for contrast.

Custom Trim

Trim is where barndominiums either look sharp or look amateur. Ridge caps, eave trim, gable trim, window wraps, door jambs — we fabricate standard trim in stock and custom profiles for anything unusual. Color-matched to your panel choice, up to 20' lengths.

Fasteners & Accessories

Color-matched fasteners, closure strips, ridge vents, underlayment — all the small stuff that makes the difference between a watertight install and a callback. We stock the right fasteners for every panel we fabricate.

05

Wainscoting & Accents

High-end barndo builds mix panel profiles for contrast and visual interest — a standing seam roof with board & batten siding, or wood grain steel accents on gable ends. We can fabricate all the profiles your design calls for in coordinated colors.

Common Questions

Barndo
Questions
Answered

What metal panels are best for a barndominium in Indiana?+
For the roof, standing seam is the premium choice — hidden fasteners, cleaner look, better for lower pitches. MP150 is an excellent value for residential barndo roofing with exposed fasteners. For siding, board & batten is the dominant modern farmhouse panel right now — concealed fasteners, clean vertical lines. For a more agricultural or budget-friendly look, MP36 siding works great. We can walk you through the tradeoffs on a quick call.
Do you sell material directly or only through contractors?+
We sell both ways. Contractors get account pricing and contractor-specific tools. Homeowners and owner-builders can purchase material directly. Either way, you're getting panels fabricated at our Bainbridge facility — the same product going to the same projects.
Can you connect me with a contractor who builds barndominiums in Indiana?+
Yes. We have an extensive list of contractors across Indiana who regularly purchase our materials. We can connect you with contractors in your area who know our panels, work with our product every day, and can offer the Indiana Metal Weathertight Warranty on your build. Call us or submit a quote request and we'll make the introduction.
How much does a barndominium cost in Indiana?+
Material costs vary significantly based on size, panel selection, and design complexity. The steel exterior envelope — roofing, siding, and trim — is one of the most cost-effective parts of the build relative to what you get. Get a quote from us for the material side, and talk to your builder about the full project budget. We can give you accurate material pricing once we know your dimensions and panel selections.
Do you cut panels to custom lengths for barndominium projects?+
Every panel we fabricate is cut to the exact length specified. Barndominiums often have unique dimensions — tall walls, long roof sections, custom overhangs — and we handle all of it. Give us your measurements and we'll cut clean panels that install right the first time.
Is metal roofing good for a barndominium in Indiana's climate?+
It's the right choice for Indiana specifically. Metal handles freeze-thaw cycles, hail, heavy snow loads, and high winds better than any other exterior material. Our panels are Class 4 impact rated — the highest hail resistance rating available. And the 40-year paint warranty means you won't be repainting or replacing siding in 15 years like you would with wood or fiber cement.
